Math!!

A subject which is not a favorite of everyone. Its one subject that was a nightmare for most of the kids, back in school.

However, for those who love mathematics you would definitely want to try this puzzle. It make look simple but its not that easy.

So time to recollect all that you had studied back in school and apply the required formula and try to solve this puzzle. Lets see how quickly you can solve this puzzle.

**The answer is 1**

How??

Simple.. Do you remember the BODMAS RULE that we learnt back in school and an another rule according to which we got to turn the fraction into an inline expression.

The common mistake that most of us do is that we forget to consider 1/3 as our first step in the calculation.

First step is 3 ÷ (1/3) i.e. 3*3 which is 9

Second step is 9 – 9 + 1

Third step i.e. 0 + 1 which is 1.

Hence the final answer to the above puzzle is one.

So how many of you got this correct??

I forgot about this stuff. It has been a while since I seen this type of math.

Owww! I got a headache now. Yeah I remember having to remember the order to follow. Sometimes I would forget but I did manage a B+ average .

I don’t believe the answer you posted is correct. I arrived at the answer of -1, and here’s how. I will repost the original question (to the best of my abilities in the comment section) and break down step by step how I got to -1.

9 – 3 / 1/3 + 1

There are no brackets or exponents, so to solve this formula, the division occurs first. 3 divided by 1/3 is equal to 9, yielding this formula:

9 – 9 + 1

There is no multiplication, so the next step to occur is addition. 9 + 1 = 10, which yields this formula:

9 – 10

The answer to this simplified formula is -1. I will conduct some research into this and check back to see if I am mistaken.

I was incorrect. Some research led me to an article written with the help of a Matthew Zaremsky, who teaches mathematics at Binghamton University. The explanation he gives is that the acronym PEDMAS is often blindly followed when solving problems like this, which is precisely what I did. Although addition is done before subtraction in more complex problems, in the simpler solution I came up with, the solution is found by evaluating the expression from left to right. What’s interesting is that my research led me to multiple answers before I found this article, which all had their own rationales. Some other answers that people came up with were 0, 9, and even 27 in one case.

i got 1 as my answer yaaay, we are always reminded about pemdas in my elementary days
